A short video shared by our lecturer to avoid stereotyping and generalization when writing a dissertation.
This week we are covering the second chapter LITERATURE REVIEW
below are notes that I have done based on my own words
Literature review needs a lot of reading to complete. But firstly, you need to identify the target user and issue before starting the literature review.
target user/ audience must not be too general
We can narrow down them using the 4 types of segmentation - demographic, cultural, psychographic & behavioral.
Demographic segmentation
easy to measure
base on age, family size, gender, education...
Cultural segmentation
uses the cultural origin
base on ethnicity, believes, religions...
Psychographic segmentation
personality of person
base on lifestyle, value, interest...
Behavioral segmentation
base on knowledge, attitude & response
can narrow down the target user but will end up have targeted user that is to less
The next part when writing literature review, it can be break into 4 step - Collect, Read, Organize, Link
Collect
Search any relevant journals
may search base on key words combination
try on different sources
read the abstract to identify whether it is relevant to your research
Read
read detail manner
start reading the abstract, intro, conclusion
continue for further reading when the journal is relevant to your study
Organize
Highlight key point while reading
organize all the key point
Identify the author and year published
Link
Link up key points using a mind map
make connection between key point
Understand and search on journal based on user/audience & issue
identify the target user/ audience of the issue
example: target user - youth issue - digital addition
so do research based on the topic of youth and digital addition separately
understand them separately then only link them together
research of topic can base on :
definition
problem
factor
different context
prominent opinions
example
take note on " As a designer what can I offer? "
these are websites that can do research on
