Title: Lecture on dissertation writing

The dissertation is split into 6 chapter

  1. Introduction

  2. Literature review

  3. Research method

  4. Findings

  5. Analysis

  6. Conclusion

This week we are covering the first chapter INTRODUCTION

below are notes that I have done based on my own words

  1. Introduction

    1. Problem statement

      1. state why want to highlight the problem

      2. exp: why people want Sunway pyramid, but not go to damen

      3. A maximum of 3 problems can be stated, which means 3 studies to be cover for the following chapter. Give a general understanding of the problem stated (no need to go into detail, just a rough explanation)

    2. Research purpose

      1. explain why the problem is happening

      2. state the things that wanted to focus on the topic

      3. ensure the problem statement has its related research

    3. Aim

      1. Only ONE aim

      2. the overall intention on what want to archive, to prove

    4. Objectives

      1. to archive the aim

      2. a research-based on what can be see/ touch, measurable

      3. no need to state any collection data

      4. only statement about research methodology

      5. can be multiple objective to archive the aim

    5. Scope of study/research question

      1. question back the objective, will the public agree?

      2. what to know about the research

      3. from a Broad topic > Restricted topic > Narrow topic > Research question

    6. Scope of research /study

      1. the study abut the topic

      2. state what will not cover

      3. state the purpose of the study, provide an explanation of the study, state the duration of the study, topic/theories will discuss, the location of the study

    7. background of research

      1. Intro of the research, why the study is important

      2. review on current information surrounding the issue

      3. general intro of the site

      4. address the gaps or missing links, the significance/ benefit of the site

    8. Research methods

      1. qualitative method (interview, surveys, existing data)

      2. quantitative (interviews of a focus group, observation), state who will involve

    9. Research structure

      1. short explanation about what does every chapter cover

    10. Significance of research

      1. what want to prove/ what to know in the study

      2. how it will contribute to the development of your field
